Delight in these classic, soft, and chewy sugar cookies that are perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (at cool room temperature)
  • 1 3/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg (plus 1 large egg yolk)
  • 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for rolling cookies in)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheet with parchment.
  • Mix dry ingredients in a bowl. Beat butter and sugar until fluffy, then add egg, yolk, and vanilla.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet, mix until combined. Form dough into balls, coat in sugar.
  • Place on baking sheet, bake for 10-14 minutes until golden. Cool on rack.
  • Store in airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for 3 months.

Notes

For softer cookies, do not overbake.
